Bangalore Mirror’s Sting Operation on a Bangalore Hospital

April 14, 2008 – 3:05 pm

Government hospitals are meant to be savior for the need and poor people. Also, for the public in general. But what sting operation shows with proof that it is also place of harrasment. Knowing most of the people comming here are needy and helpless, they are being taken advantage of. In this case the BM undercover journalist went to get a HIV/AIDS certificate, she was asked to go to various places and not the required process. All this happened at the Bowring and Lady Carzon hospital at Shivajinagar.

In such cases one has to be directed to the Voluntary counselling and testing centres(VCTSs). However, she was taken to an OPD. On asking for an AIDS certificate she was given a number of tests other the one she asked for and sent to a private clinic opposite the hospital. Well, understandable that the doctor might had a cut there. Attestation as per rules should be free but here doctor charged fees that too Rs 600. Is the fees higher because she claimed she was going abroad. There too, was bargaining and the doctor claimed it was his fees. Was he not paid for that by the government? In a series of questions he asked at the end including age, height, weight includes “whats your bra size?”.  She gave a number which was hardly hearable. But the doctor picked up and said it must be smaller. Was he checking her vitals stats too!

Vow! Is not he doing a great job.
