GALLERYSKE presents
How Long does it take to Complete a Circle?
by
Susanta Mandal
Opens: Saturday, 5th March 2011
On View: 7th March to 16th April 2011

In How Long does it take to Complete a Circle, Susanta Mandal continues his experiments with structural constructions to perplex viewers and subvert ways of seeing. Using steel and glass, Susanta creates structures that attempt to provide a visual depiction of the invisible energies that run through pipelines. These pipelines are the latent backbone of buildings. Hidden and yet crucial, they create multiple pockets of tunnels inside the solid building space. Through these numerous ‘soft’ elements (physically and virtually) move. In this exhibition, signals of light, threads that move and air pressure along with soap solution have been used to portray the visual flow of electricity.

The other body of work in the show evolved from the knowledge and fear of an escalating shortage of resources. Here lenses enlarge the clarity of candlelight (like a magic lantern), and project many small details from the architecture which might hallucinate, with ghostly images familiar to it but unfamiliar at the same time.
Susanta Mandal completed his BFA in painting from the Government College of Arts and Craft, Kolkata and his MFA in painting from the Benares Hindu University. Though trained as a painter, Susanta has always been interested in working with forms and materials that have manifested themselves in mechanized sculptural installations that use low-tech mechanisms that are almost always exposed.

In his previous explorations, Susanta has used light as an inherent part of his work; not relying on high-tech gallery produced fixtures, but drawing on a more traditional engagement with the medium. Shadows play a very crucial role in his works as symbols of abstract fear- fear of life, fear of social change. Susanta also uses photographs and video along with objects that have been mechanized.

Aero India 2011 is the 8th International Exhibition for Aerospace, Defense and Civil Aviation which takes place after every 2 years.

This was my first visit to any Aero show and I was thinking to visit in the weekend. But the organizers have stopped selling tickets at places like SBI branches and Malls like Forum and Garuda. I was told ticket is available at the venue. With a friends advice, I bought tickets online. Ticket cost for general entry on weekdays was Rs 400 and for weekend was Rs 500. But cost for entry to exhibition area was Rs 1500. One is supposed to take a printout of the receipt page and this will be exchanged for the original ticket at the venue on display of a photo ID card. on Saturday morning we went boarded a BIA Volvo bus from Indiranagar BDA complex to Yelahanka Air Force station. However, they charged complete airport charge of Rs 180. On the contrary I could have been to Shivaji Nagar and from there to Yelahanka Air Force station. This would have cost be only Rs 30. Reached Yelahanka Air Force station around 10.30 am. Already there was a huge line for collection tickets booked online. Stood in the queue for almost 2 hours before we enter. While I was in the queue the show already started and many jets were flying sorties. After we went inside through gate # 2, it was a long walk. After hearing many ignorant answers and entering two wrong gates, reached a high ground from where Aero show is to be seen.

The area was fenced and people were already sitting near the fence. By 2.15 pm the aero show started again. First helicopters displayed carrying jeep and people. Then was the turn of Brazilian EMBRAER followed by US F – 16, F – 22, Europhyter, Red Bull team featuring Donier planes, Intermediate Jet Trainer etc. The jets flew spectacular sorties with various degree of maneuvering. The also few very low past bys. It was amazing to see jet fighters so close. Though I enjoyed the show but disappointed that it was not a photograph taking friendly. It was so crowded and there was hardly any arrangement by the authorities. They could have made a separate paid stand from where enthusiastic people can take pictures.

At the end the Surya Kiran team of IAF few ejecting gas featuring the colour of Indian flag. That was a sight to watch. Opposite the display ground IAF had put a small museum featuring its deeds and miniature planes. But food arrangement at the venue was pathetic. There was hardly any good food and stalls were charging 250 – 350 % the normal charge for most items. By 5 pm we were done and the exit was done from the back side. From there we had to walk almost 2 -3 km to reach the highway. As it was an one way road, we could not take an auto also. After reaching the highway we got a bus quickly to Shivajinagar and then to Indiranagar (cost Rs 30).

The Octoberfest of Bangalore is designed after the original Oktoberfest of Germany. The original Oktoberfest occurred in Munich, on October 12, 1810. The Indian Octoberfest started in 2005 and was held at Palace grounds, Bangalore. Since then it happens every year for three days in the month of October.

This is the first time I visited Octoberfest in Bangalore. This time it took place from 22bd to 24th October, 2010. Along with my friends, I decided to visit on 23rd October, 2010. The ticket cost was Rs 400 only for the entry fees. There were lots of music, some games, good food stalls, beer, huge areas to stroll and people all over the place. The event was on from 12 noon to 10.30 pm. The music highlight of that day was performance by singer Shaan. The market price and beer price inside was same. However, if you multiple numbers you were given freebies like Kingfisher cap, hat etc.

It was good time with good music, good food and good crowd.
