Sometime back I made a trip to the south Canara(Dakshina Kannada) district of Karnataka around the weekend of the first week of last month(April). My friend had booked two tickets for us on a A/c sleeper coach abroad Sugama travels. Typically private buses leaves Bangalore around 10.30 – 11 pm in the night reaches Mangalore by 7 am or so in the morning. However, the pick-up starts much earlier from different places in Bangalore like Jayanagar, Indiranagar etc and reaches their depot in Gandhinagar or Shivananda circle. We have picked up near the Indiranagar RTO around 9.15 pm. Good news for people who are staying in and around Indiranagar that buses like Sugama and Ideal travels do pick-up and drop to Indiranagar. Incidentaly this was my first travel in a sleeper coach bus. We got the upper birth and unfortunately the A/c was not working we were refunded Rs 130 on each ticket. It is advisable not to go for upper berths in sleeper coach buses as they may not be comfortable. Lower berths are good as you will not feel the momentum of the bus.

On reaching Mangalore, we boarded an auto and asked to drop at Punja International hotel. The driver politely asked Rs 20 against meter, being habituated in Bangalore of such – just boarded. I discovered Punja International’s price has almost doubled to Rs 972 from what I found in my research book. We made our way out and the auto driver guided us to another hotel (Hotel Hindustan) little further on the opposite side of the road at Hampankatte, according to our budget specifications. The auto driver took just Rs 20 and dint asked for more. We went for a non A/c double bed room for Rs 399+tax. Swiftly sliped into our room, slept little bit and got fresh and went on for our sourjon of Mangalore. I think the hotel is just good enough to stay and do not wish to eat anything here.

Little walk on the left side will take you to Jain Restaurant which serves tea, coffee, juice, and south Indian tiffin. There is also a Punjabi dhaba on the first floor of the same building. I found the best way to see Mangalore city is on a auto. Luckily we found a gentle auto driver who agreed to give a tour of the city which includes waiting. All these on meter. I was impressed with Mangalore roads being clean and people well behaved. Typically the coastal belt of Karnataka is very hot and least to say it was very hot there.

This is what I found written on all autos with a few exceptions or anomalies.

Minimal fare – Rs 11
There after every KM – Rs 7
Waiting for every 15 mins – Rs 2 (one auto wrote 5 min – not correct)
I also came to know that after 10.30 pm it is double fare over there.
Looks like mostly adhere to that.

Mangalore Tour:

We hired an Auto on meter to show us the city. Our first stop was St Alyosias Church on Lighthouse hill road. This chapel resembles the Sistine Chapel in Rome and have features magnificent piece of paintings inside. The church is located inside St Alyosias collage. St Alyosias collage is a very popular collage in Mangalore and a centre of academic excellence. Next stop was Kadri Manjunatha Temple on the foot of kadri hills. Then on the top of kadri hills there was Pandava caves and one can get a magnificient view of the Mangalore skyline. Then we left for Pilikula park which is around 15 km from Mangalore and features a biological park among others. Other spots among our sightseeing includes Sultan bathery, Panambur beach, Mangaladevi temple. Read the more descriptive and professional version of the tour. I have missed few of the spots like Tannir Bhavi beach, sunset at Pannambur beach with the promise that I will visit Mangalore again.

One very important note: Always keep in mind the food timings while you are in Mangalore. You may not get food if you visit any restaurant or eatery other the lunch or dinner time. Lunch time is typically from 12.30 pm to 3.30 pm and dinner time from 7 pm to 10.30 pm. In such cases one may head for Pizza Hut at Bharath Mall opposite KSRTC bus stand.

The second day we left for Kukke Subramanya and Dharmasthala. Private transportation in Mangalore is quite costly, so better try for public buses. But do not worry, the public bus services are quite good. One can head for the KSRTC bus stand and hop on to a bus for Dharmastha or Kukke Subramanya. This is what we choosed. After the NH, as the bus entered state highway it was all green forest and side by was river Kumaradhara flowing all along. We reached Kukke Subramanya in the afternoon and we were lucky to get the darshan as the temple opened by then again. Took a small stroll in the park behind the Adi Subramanya temple in complete silence with sudden wishpering of birds. The deity here is Lord Subramanya. Remember all Men will have to open their shirts and vests while entering the inner temples. After that we had lunch in one of the nearby hotels and left for Dharmasthala on a KSRTC bus. We reached Dharmastha in the early evening and had to face the evening and weekend rush of devotees by standing in the queue. As the queue was starting to move by friend cautioned me about pickpockets. I was glad to see they were serving water to the devotees in the queue. Once inside the temple it was just lamps and no electric lights. The deity here is Lord Manjunatha. On the way out I encountered a group of Yakshagana, who were quite happy to oblize photograph request. It was night by then(almost 8 pm) and I was little worried if we will get a bus for Mangalore now. It get me a scare when one auto driver outside the temple main gate told me the last bus just left. However, god’s grace on enquring in eatery we were told that a new bus has been introduced at 8.30 pm and it will leave from inside the temple premises. Yes, the bus stand is inside the temple main gate. The bus dropped us in Mangalore around 11 pm. Now we had worrying of going empty stomach to our hotel. But God’s grace again we found a hotel Shalimar opposite KSRTC bus stand and was serving food. We had good course of non veg food. By the time we were out of the eatery cops come closing it.

Next day in the morning went for a short shightseeing in a private bus from the State bank stand to Sultan Bathery. Well, I must city private bus frequency is quite good and the buses itself were quite good. Then went on to have food at Shalimar opposite KSRTC bus stand. The next volvo Bus to Bangalore was at 1.30 pm. On inquring at the counter I was told ticket will be given on the bus. On boarding the bus I asked the conductor for ticket and he told I will come. I did not imagine what a great misunderstanding had happened then. I was sitting easy and enjoying the AC. The conductor while checking the tickets came to me and asked for my ticket and I told him give me one. But to that misunderstanding, there was no other option but to unboard the bus at B.C road as it was full. After waiting for quite some there, a KSRTC bus to Bangalore came. I inquired if seat is there, the answer was yes, but I was told the fare is Rs 432. I was desperate to get a bus and just said ok and boarded the bus.

I went and settled in my seat and took a quick nap. By the time the bus reached the ghat section in Sakleshpur, I saw the bus from which I had to get down was down and passengers were looking for other alternatives. Well, I had a mixed reaction at that moment, at the same time I did not wanted to laugh at the passenger’s misfortune. Some of those passengers boarded our bus. But then it was our bus’s turn to break down but god’s grace it was rectified by bus staffs. It took the route via Medikeri and took almost 10 hours to reach Bangalore.

This was sometime in the month of November 2006, again a Kstdc package tour. I just love this which lets me to be with myself. Morning I was there at Badami house office near coporation to board the bus. It was good untill we crossed Hosur. The quality of road has improved significantly and the road is a toll one. On the way you will find Reliance A1 plaza which is a combination of petrol station and food joint. I think that makes good business sense, as someone filling petrol on the highway might also want to eat something most of the time. The ambience was quite good and they have maintained it quite clean. Clean rest rooms along with shower facility available for a little fee. Dosa, Idly, puri, chappati, juice, etc are available.

The first stop was Krishnagiri dam – on river Cauvery. The rugged terrain around the dam could very well be transformed into a movie set of old days dacoit den. However, it has a charm of its own. The stagnant water did strike me which was almost green with formation of green algae. Krishnagiri, which is in Tamil Nadu – there are few other places to see like THALI THE LITTLE ENGLAND, GOVERNMENT MUSEUM – Krishnagiri Excellence, ARULMIGU MARAGATHAMBIGAI CHANDRA CHOODESWARA TEMPLE, KELEVARAPALLI RESERVOIR PROJECT(KPRP), Hanumanthathirtham. To know more about this places visit here.

The next and the last stop was Hogenakal falls. The approach road to that place is quite narrow and not in a good condition to say the least. The highlight of this spot is the Croacle ride(one type of round shaped boat made from bamboo) on river Cauvery. Kstdc has contracts with local boatmans and they charge around Rs 300 per person for Kstdc tourists. I was little apprehensive about the boat ride in the beginning as we get to hear many people dying there every year. But once on the boat, it was just joy ride. Our boatman, seems to be quite experienced and he was encouraging us to enjoy and said nothing to worry. It was mostly grade 1 rapids and maybe 2 or 3 grade 2. This falls on Cauvery river is the border between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. After floating a few kilometers on the Karnataka side of Cauvery we reached with a group of my fellow tourists to the main spot where the falls is located. Its amazing the sound of gushing water in the mids of a river flowing from all side. The boatman told around 20 something falls are there – do not remember the exact number now. Here Cauvery falls into a gorge before flowing into Tamil nadu. From there we boarded the boat again and moved on to the Tamil Nadu side of the falls. This side is quite crowded and human habitation is there. One watch tower is here made of iron which you will be scared to climb at the first sight. the watch tower can be availed at Re 1. From here one can get the best view of the whole area, even a distant view of the Karnataka side of the falls. Also, the gorge behind can be viewed with much clarity. It is recommended to take pictures from here. We boarded the boat again and our boatman droped us on the Tamil Nadu side. On the way he gave a few rounds(got the boat move in circles) …. it was awesome as it was near the bank. Imagine you are in a whirlpool and moving circles!! I pray never happen to anyone. Our bus was awaiting nearby at the bus stand. Do not expect much about food, although cool drinks, biscuits will be available. However, one hotel is there which provided quite decent lunch, given the place it was. Do not remember exactly if the hotel was in the Karnataka or Tamil Nadu side – I think it was in the karnataka side.

Indeed fun guys but one should be carefull.

The visit to Medikeri has been an enchanting one. 252 kms from Bangalore and 1525 m above sea level lies Madikeri, the district headquarters of Kodagu or coorg. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Started the journey on 7th April 2006. There was bit planning before that and lots of wrangling with my girl fren about the timmings. I have packed my bag the day before but I forgot a couple of things. On the date of journey I was at late night shift and unfortunately the alarm clock did not rang and I got up late and funny the driver was also sleeping. Even the security might also have been sleeping. I logged in at 6 AM. I left office by 11.05. Reached home and hurriedly took the bag and boarded an auto and left for Majestic. Near ulsoor bus station I remembered that I forgot to take the hotel booking receipt. Shit…lol Had to come back again. Took the recipt, ……….. and left for Majestic. In the meantime she was calling non stop. ” The bus is going to leave come soon…..” Traffic really sucks…… Atlast reached Majestic and started running toward platform 6 and heard she calling me. Opps I made it. Thought I will not be able to make it. The Rajhamsha buses are good. They have comfortable seats and are spacious. The bus was almost empty and the journey had been a good one although it was hot and dusty. We had our lunch at a KSTDC VEG hotel on the way to Mysore. I had a nice sleep on my gf’s lap. After crossing Mysore the landscape is very irregular. After a journey of around 8 hours fighting heat and dust reached Medikeri. The serene, small hill station. It was cold then — 8.30 PM.

On setting our foot on Medikeri , first brought a few needs like soap, paste and towel. Then haired an Auto and left for our pre-booked hotel KSTDC Valley View near Raja’s seat.

Day 2:

Last night I had put an alarm. We got up at around 7 am. Slowly got fresh, had breakfast and left for sight seeing by 9.30 AM. I was looking to hire a city taxi which was supposed to show us all the places. But that looked costly at 1600 rupess and she advised to take bus. So first we walked toward the GT circle and took a auto for abbey falls as that was only 9 KM away. We hired the auto for 150 up and down and for half n hour waiting time. It was good a drive through the narrow winding road. The Abbey falls is inside a coffee estate. On the way back the driver also shown us the Coorg raja’s tomb, where the Raja and his royal family has been cremated. Then we boarded a bus for Bhagamandala. An one way trip cost 20 rupess per person which is cheap but the quality of the bus is not bad. It was a good ride through the ups and down of the hills. At Bhagamandala we watched the sangam of three rivers viz. Kaveri, kanneri and the mythical river sujoythi. On the otherside of the road there is a temple which was a collection of many deities. The architecture of the temple resembled Chinese style a lot. From there we bought Pure honey. Opps very tasy. There on we haired a van for Talcauvery for Rs 100. Talcauvery is the origin of the river cauvery. We also hiked the bhramhagiri hills. Excellent…what a view from there…also saw a couple of wind mills there. Took a couple of pictures there. On the way back we bought coffee, Elaichi. On reaching Bhagamandala, we had lunch at one KSTDC hotel. We boarded the bus for Medikeri again. In Medikeri we hurried for the Raja’s seat where also a flower show was going on. We enjoyed the enchenting view from the Raja’s seat. Took a few pictures of the flower art. Finally we headed back for to our hotel. Took rest for sometime and by 7.30 we went to see the town. Hardly we could see anything, it was almost a empty town. She asked for tea and we went for a Mallu resturent. The gobi manchurian was good. After a little stroll we we decided to have dinner there. I went for KP, alu-jeera-capsicum sabzee and she for a sea fish. With full stomach we headed back.

Day 3:

Today I did not put alarm and as a result got up late. By the time we checked out it was almost 12 noon. Then I wanted to taste coorgi food so we went to the bharamagiri hotel. We settled for pork chilly, rice roti and pork curry. Excellent food. I would like to have more. LOL! With packed stomach we finally headed toward the bus stand and found the the latest Rajhamsa has left 5 min back. Wrangled for a while for the bus and finally settled for a semi deluxe. On the bus stand I bought a bottle of sealed honey and few butter fruits. The butter fruits are not that tasty. To tell the fact honestly it is very tasty, I did not knew how to eat butter fruit then. I actually tried to eat the seed. No problem, you can have a laugh on me.

We have been lucky to see the coorg rain also. It was pleasent one and pleasing cool breezes. The bus took the Virajpet route amidst the forest, hills and coffee estates. However, the bus took a hell lot of time to reach bangalore. My goodness, the bangalore traffic which I almost forgot came to haunt me at 10.30 pm. We got down at some point near Majestic and droped her at her hostel and reached home hurriedly.

One can book the Karnataka government owned Kstdc valley view here in Bangalore itself at the Kstdc office at Badami house near corporation. The hotel was quite good at that price(Rs 500 per 24 hours). Please note that the checkin and checkout time is 12 – 12 noon. Food is ok. They have a bar too and you can ask for room service if you would like. The hotel is actually on top of a hill. On the back side of the rooms there is a balcony from where one have a nice view of the surrounding hills.

My coorg tour is hardly over as I am yet to see most of the places like Irpu falls, Nisharga dhama, Nagarhole, Siddapur etc. Looking forward to another trip sometime soon.

Note: Regular buses are available from Majestic. Please check the with Ksrtc, the karnataka government run transport company. Recently Ksrtc has open many counters in various of Bangalore. So one can enquire or buy tickets from there too.

This was a package tour from Kstdc, the sate tourism deparment. They provided a semi luxuary bus, which was quite comfortable. One has to reach their Badami house office near Corporation by 7 am to board the bus. This days the deparature time is 7.15 am in most cases. My second tour with Kstdc was also a good one and good thing about this packages is that one can be just with himself/herself. The first stop was Sivanasamudram – a nice waterfall near Malavalli, Mandya district. The waterfall is around 50meters tall on River Kaveri (Cauvery) and is a beautiful sight, especially during monsoon. To reach Sivanasamudram, which is around 140 km from Bangalore:, There are 2 routes.

a) Take Mysore Road, before Mandya, take diversion from Maddur and drive straight towards Malavalli. After Malavalli, speak to locals and they can guide you correctly. One could also return via the same route. This route has good roads and one can enjoy the new Bangalore-Mysore Expressway too.

b) Alternatively, take the National Highway that passes through Kanakapura. Drive straight up to Malavalli and then ask any local villager for directions. They will know. (This is the route to reach Bheemeshwari Fishing Resort).

Best time to visit: September to February

Here the first hydro electricity project in Asia was installed. The two water falls are called Gaganachukki and Barachukki. Read more about them here.

The second stop was Somnathpur temple. Here is the stunning Keshava temple built by one Hoysala army commander. Here looks like time has stoped and one just has to stand and marvel what a wonder it is. Read more about it here.

Kstdc lets you have food on the way sometimes at their own Kstdc restaurants or at private ones. Here as far as I remember they stoped at Kollegal for food. Here food is not all good, somehow you can just manage to have it.

The last stop was Ranganathittu bird santuary. This was the second time I went there and enjoyed as much as I did the first time. Here one can go boating to check the migratory birds which nest on the trees besides cauvery river. At first sight it looks a lake but guys its a river. One might also come across a few crocs while boating. And do not forget to take some good resolution optical zoom camera to capture the birds. The pictures I have taken that time was with a Kodak KB 10 which do not have zoom capability, so you may have to look out for the birds in the pictures. The santuary is marked with species mostly found in there so visitors can know. Read more about it here.

I reached bangalore in the night by 8.45 or so and last is the same Badami house office where from we boarded. One can find auto from there or can walk a little bit to the Mysore bank bus stop to go towards Majestic or near the cubbon park bus stop for MG road/Indiranagar?Airport road etc. Also, the Market bus stand is nearby.

Note: The package price at that time was Rs 600. Please check with Kstdc for recent updates and details.
