Dancing in NightClubs Banned in Bangalore?

January 27, 2008 – 10:59 pm

On January 25, the TOI featured a news that Dancing in Nightclubs is banned in Bangalore. The first thought that came to my mind is – does nightclubs and discs are same? If this two are not the same then some investigation may be required. Also, I think entertainment centers at night are classified under various categories like dance bar(banned in Bangalore), discs, pubs, bar and restuarant etc. I saw people after a few drinks just start dancing to the music. I do not think such dance are being stopped. Please correct me, if such dance is illegal now. If the ban is true, this may be a bad news to the party loving people of Bangalore. Already Bangalore is adjusting with the 11.30 pm deadline at night. Looks like we Bangalorean these days mostly in the “Salpa adjust maadi” mode whether it is traffic or otherwise. Bangalore is growing, evolving into a more cosmopolitan city and getting international attention. May be we should be little flexible now. A little comparison with other leading cities in India in this regard:

Mumbai: Dancing allowed at night clubs
Deadline – 1.30 am, Dance bars banned.

Chennai: Dancing allowed at nightclubs
Deadline – 1.30 am, Dance bars non existent

Hyderabad: Dancing allowed at nightclubs
Deadline – Last order 11 pm but clubs are open till 1 am.
Dance bars banned.

Delhi: Dancing allowed at nightclubs
Deadline – 1.30 am( may be extended till 4 am before Asian Games)
Dance Bars banned.

Bangalore: Dancing at night clubs banned
Deadline – 11.30 pm(strictly enforced)
Dance bars banned

Now with many international companies setting base here, comes a lot of people whose expections are different. Also, we have a huge number of international tourists comming to Bangalore or passing through enroute. I think this factors should be taken into account when deciding on the lifestyle of a city. As of one of the most important factor taken into account while grading a city is the lifestyle it offers.

  2. Bangalore welcomes people from different countries, but not the ill cultures. Its so bad to see that Indians are no more worried about the diminishing Indian tradition and the ruining of once called “Rich Indian Culture” of which we were proud of. These pubs, night clubs and bars have ruined the life and living of the people of Bangalore. Hope people wake up and realise the ill effects of the increasing number of pubs and bars.

  3. What culture do you see that you are preserving? Something in your memory? Look at the way people behave on the roads – and most of these guys do not go to pubs. Culture in India today is limited to family units – big or small. There is nothing in the culture you talk of to connect with people who are different, unknown. The western culture you so happily bash, is at least more benevolent to its society in real and practical terms and not written in some forgotten book. I love India, but am not getting fooled by your trigger happy comments condemning people, while you cannot see anything bad near your own home… of course those people are not part of your family/community?

  4. It is ugly to see a newspaper campaigning for the rich, bold and the beautiful to continue their mindless revelry. What dance are these people in these dens? Kuchipudi or Bharatanatyam? Even kids know that alcohol, drugs and free sex rules in these clubs.

  7. I can’t believe some of the comments to this terrible news. Seriously. If someone doesn’t like to go to a club or drink, then no-one is forcing them, but to force people to NOT do something as enjoyable and healthy as DANCE is ridiculous. I thought India was meant to be a developing country, becoming more progessive, but it seems like its still in the dark ages. Now with the recent attacks on mosques and churches, I wonder if religious extremism taking over. Bangalore should be ashamed of such atrocities happening in a once vibrant, progressive city that prided themselves on being a shining example of a liberal safe and modern India.
