First Casualty Of DLF IPL
May 7, 2008 – 1:24 am
Before starting of the first Match between Bangalore Royal Challengers and Kolkata Knight Riders, RCB’s owner Vijay Mallya told in a brief interview that he is a hard task master and there is no wrong in being one. But he might have expected that he would have to take hard decisions so soon. Following the poor run of the Bangalore Royal Challengers led by Rahul Dravid, Mallya may not have many options or he felt let down by the tips from Charu Sharma. Royal Challengers lost 5 of the 7 matches played. Charu Sharma became the first casualty of the high profile DLF IPL. He has been asked to leave or you can say sacked. Charu Sharma will be replaced by Brijesh Patel, secretary of the Karnataka State Cricket Association and a former India batsman. Also, there is not much lightning display of cricket from them like other teams. Also, the bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad seems to be on the sacking line. The upcoming one or two matches may play a decider of his fate.
On the contrary Rajasthan Royals, whom nobody gave any chance went on to the top of the points tally. From outside I may not able to say much but what looks like is the Royal Challengers do not look like a very well gel team. Selection of players have done the maximum damage in the first place and what aggrieved the problem is perceived lack of understanding. Understandably the morale of the team is very low now and more drastic decisions may be required. I was for a surprise today when I saw Adam Gilchrist leading Deccan Chargers in place of VVS Laxman. So Mallya may take a cue from there and think of change of leadership. The main problem with Dravid is the mental block. He is not mentally programmed to hit the ball right and that too one after another. Here one required very fast thinking and decision making. With respect to Dravid, as former Indian Captain Sunil Gavaskar commented during a match that it is how a player is programmed, the way he plays. Dravid mainly perceived a test player in the beginning of his career and then a good one day player no doubt. But it is difficult to change his way of game at one go, at the fag end of his career. So Vijay Mally may have to take all this into consideration during his planning.
