Flood Revisited Bangalore
September 15, 2007 – 4:07 am
Looks like Octobar 2005, Flood revisited Bangalore. Yesterday, i.e 13th of September 2007 the sky opened up and it was water flurry for one and half hour or so. Not like yesterday’s rain caused this water logging or flood in certain areas of Bangalore but that was the final push. It has been raining quite good for past two days in Bangalore. Yesterday double road, Indiranagar was like a overflowing steam with more than knee deep water at some places. Just Imagine how it may have been in low lying areas of JP Nagar, Puttanahalli etc. I remember in 2005 in Cambridge Layout it was almost 4 feet water in some places. One may note that such floods happen only in ceratin areas and this can be explained by the geographical composition of Bangalore. Bangalore is composed of four valleys namely Hebbal Valley, Vrishabhavathi Valley, Koramangala valley and Challaghatta valley. Those who are staying in the low lying areas get affected in the moonson season. Also, one of the reason of such floods or water logging happening in bangalore could be because of the dwindling number of lakes. I remember someone told me that Bangalore was known as the lake city of India during British era. As a result water may not have many place to go and the drainage system can also be blamed to an extant. I understand, given less rainfall compare to other parts of the country - the drains are not equiped to handle sudden heavy gush of water. After 2005 flood, I read in newspaper that some new storm water drains are to be built and existing drains will be upgraded or cleaned up. Now with Flood again here in 2007, not sure what has happened. Also, with encrouchment of the lakes it is also possible that lakes might overflow. Madivala lake could have been the case this time as I saw water gushing out from that side on the Hosur road. Last time I saw Madivala lake it was almost full. I have a few picture for you to watch.
