After IT, Back office and legal related outsourcing to India, now Health Care outsourcing is getting prominance in developed countries. Now the health care industry not only handles medical insurance claims and medical transcription but also contacted research and clinical processing. This sector is growing at a very high rate as much as 150% and could soon turn into a billon dollar industry.
With growing health care cost in the west, Foriegn health insurance companies are gearing up to send more and more patients to India for major surguries like heart valve replacement etc. At one point of time what was mooted as medical tourism is now turing out to be a serious business. Under the National Heath Scheme in the US or UK and to an extent whole Europe takes a longer period of wait or one need to check in a private hospital which can be very expensive. So those cannot afford such long wait period come to India and get their health issues taken care here at almost quater of the amount they might have spent in their native country. It may be noted that these days some hospitals like Apollo Hospital, Escorts Heart Institute, AIIMs, CMC Vellore etc. Global players like Blue Cross, Blue Shield Atena Insurance etc are exploring to open up shop in India.
Cost is a major factor. Hospitals in India typically charge around $6000 – $8000 for coronary bypass surgery, $6500 for a joint replacement or hip resurfacing etc which is a small fraction of what one might have to pay in US hospitals. I have heard lots of abuses or seens bad feelings in the developed world regarding outsourcing towards India. But looks like outsourcing have come a full circle. Would any one like to say – ” I would not like to be treated by an Indan or in India?”. Let me clarify that it gives us immense please to see people comming from the developed world like US to India to get cure and go back home happy. why immense pleasure, because it is a win – win for both of us. It helps India generate more jobs and also with more health concious patients of developed world our health infrastructure can be improved further. Also, it will create more opportunities for Indian doctors and it will not be a do or die situation to fly out of India. For them also it is a win because they get to be treated at the fraction of the cost what they have spent in their home countries, with as much as competent doctors, quality hospitals and finally almost no wait time. I hope our brothers and sisters in the developed world understand this.
