Restriction on Cheeleaders?

April 24, 2008 – 6:38 pm

The politicians in Maharashtra has got a new hot topic to debate about as much as the hot cheerleaders themselves. There are so many things in Maharashtra starting from farmer suicide to infrastructure problems in Mumbai which needs their immediate attention but looks like cheerleaders have become a more important issue now.

IBN reported that “The Maharashtra state government has put restrictions, and may even consider a ban on cheerleaders performing in stadiums where Indian Premiere League matches are being held. All this after Opposition MLAs had created a hue and cry over the cheerleaders saying they degraded Indian culture.

It seems the popular and professional cheerleaders unit like Washington Redskins did not took any clearance or permission to perform in the stadium. So the question is whether without work permit can they perform? If this is the issue let them address it. But this does not seems to be the issue. Some politicians feel that this is nothing but vulgar display and equated them to Bar dancers. Policemen will now be checking for any vulgar display in the stadium. Is there no other work for them? One prominent politician said if the franchises would have taken the service of the bar dancers who have been rendered jobless after the Maharashtra government banned dancing at bars, would have done a better job. Looks like even some players have voiced opinion against the cheerleaders and see what Shahid Afridi said, “The girls in skimpy dresses should be removed from the ground as this is distracting the batsmen. Cricket itself is an entertainment. It does not require such cheerleaders to entertain.”

Now one can easily understand that you were distracted by the cheerleaders and could not score much. But don’t vent your frustration on the pretty poor girls. They are just doing their job and for which they get paid. I think it should be left to audience whether they would like to see the cheerleaders or not. If they would like to see then they should be continued, if not then they should be discontinued.
