February 21, 2009 – 3:13 am

During the early years of this decade of this century there was no multiplex and the Theatre scene was dominated by single screen cinema halls like Rex, Symphony, Lido, Galaxy, Urvashi etc. As of now many prominent Theatres like Lido, Naga faced the buldozer and new multiplexes and shopping malls came on thier place. The first multiples in Bangalore was Innovative multiples, followed by PVR and Inox. Symphony which is most probably handed by the Fame group have also become multi screen. Plaza on MG road is no longer functional. The buzz is that MG road Metro station will be comming up there. Now the last bastion of Single screen cinema hall in the central shopping area is like to face the same fate as indicated by its owner Anil Kapur.

Movies captures a large chunk of hang out activity and Rex does score high due to the comfortable ambience, strategic location and price. There are thousands of people who has memories of Rex. Anil Kapur the director of Rex and Symphony cinema halls tells that old world look and feel would be maintained.

Rex was built by an Englishman named Paul during the Second World war and was known as The Paul’s Rex. Anil’s grand father Rai Bahadur Nand Lal Kapur bought it in an auction in 1963.
