Women in Bar and Restaurants
May 21, 2009 – 11:35 am
Women were an integral part of live bands in Bangalore. But that was long time back. There were many live bands in Bangalore back in 2003-2004. Few of them were located in the Brigade road – Residency road area. Women singing or playing music is ok as could be part of entertainment. But what looked weird is these mostly imported women from other states dancing to Hindi numbers – giving a a feel of mujra where they hardly know the steps. People showing money was not often viewed as shown in TV. People could have contacted these girls for pickup on a price. This price had to be negotiated mostly through a man (pimp).

Dance bars and live bands have been banned in Bangalore after 2004 on the same ground that they act as pick up points for women and help in prostitution. Live band owners are continuing their fight legally in the Karnataka high court. However, drinking joints are hiring women as bartenders following the supreme count order saying women can be hired for this job. But looks like these bartenders are mostly the same women who used to previously work in live bands and bar dancers. Recently, one prominent local newspaper published that bars are putting women in display wearing provocative dresses. They do not dance anymore but they do floor walk. This places maybe still work as pick up points.
